I am delighted to announce that
Thomas A. Baillie, Ph.D., Professor and Dean of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Washington, has been selected as the recipient of the Founders' Award for 2012. Tom has been an outstanding leader in the fields of chemical toxicology and drug metabolism. He will organize a Founders' Award symposium at the Fall National meeting in Philadelphia. Thanks to
Fred Beland and the Awards Committee for their work in evaluating nominees for the award.
It has been an excellent year for the Division of Chemical Toxicology. Six of our members (Tom Baillie, Judy Bolton, Sheila David, Pete Dedon, John Warner, and Steve Tannenbaum) were elected ACS Fellows, and we had an outstanding Fall National Meeting in Denver. Our close relationship with Chemical Research in Toxicology has been further strengthened by CRT sponsorship of our Tuesday evening poster session and by the establishment of the CRT Young Investigator Award. We are looking forward to 2012 and our next meeting in Philadelphia. Shana Sturla has put together another strong program, which is described elsewhere in this newsletter.
The results of the Division elections are tabulated, and I'm pleased to announce that Yinsheng Wang is Treasurer-Elect, Larry Weinkers was elected Member at Large, and Pete Dedon was elected to the Nominating Committee. Finally, Gunnar Boysen was elected Secretary. The winners will begin their terms on January 1, 2012.
I want to thank Tom Spratt (Secretary) and Ashis Basu (Treasurer) for their outstanding service to the Division. They have provided constant help in dealing with the necessary functions of an ACS division. They have set a high bar for performance and dedication, but we are fortunate to have Gunnar Boysen and Jon Doorn stepping forward on January 1 to take these positions.
I would like to acknowledge and thank benefactors of the Division in 2011:
Abbott Laboratories
Bristol-Myers Squibb
ACS Publications Division and Chemical Research in Toxicology
I would also like to thank Division members who organized and taught courses and workshops, which generated proceeds or honoraria that were donated to the Division, including Fred Guengerich, Kaushik Mitra, Griff Humphries, Judy Bolton, Trevor Penning, and Lisa Peterson.
This issue of the Newsletter includes a Quarterly Chemical Report on hypochlorous acid from Charles Knutson and profiles of two of the recently elected ACS Fellows from the Division of Chemical Toxicology, Thomas Baillie and Steven Tannenbaum.
Have a safe and productive New Year!
